It looks like it is a five member race (well, 4 if you take me out :) for the 2010 StinkBall.com $1000 prize that goes to the top scoring team for the entire season. Loserville is in first place now but he is BARELY hanging on to the lead. Snipping at his heels is loser buc (these are great names and proves that they understand the scoring system which is VERY important no matter what fantasy football system you are playing in). 21 points behind the leader is David Boyer’s buttkicker57. David is one of the best StinkBall players out there and he has been with the site since the beginning (all the way back to 2009 :) In 4th place is Gary’s Cleveland Steamers (another great team name!!! really paints a picture in your head doesn’t it :). And then…..we get to yours truly in 5th place. Make no mistake StinkBall.com members, I’m not only the President but I’m also a player!!! And I ALWAYS play to win the game (wow…nice Herm Edwards quote).

Now, I don’t want to say that these are the only teams that have a chance to win. I wouldn’t say that because if you play fantasy football long enough you will learn: Anything can happen (this NFL season this is truer than ever. I could be wrong but I think this season, there have been more injuries by week 7 than in any NFL season before).

All I know is: If you want to win, you better bring your a-game because there are some good players here and the guys in the Top 5 are not going to surrender their spots without a fight. Good luck to everyone this weekend. I will be in Charlotte watching the 49ers at Panthers game this Sunday, email me if you are going to be at the game and I’ll try to find you :) Last note: Check out the new contest I created “Lucky 7/Sucky 7.

Thanks,

I have updated the StinkBall Scoring System so that more players will qualify for positive StinkBall points and avoid the -10 point penalty. The 1st change is for RunningBacks. RunningBacks now qualify for positive StinkBall points if they have at least 5 “touches” that week. A touch is defined as either a rushing attempt or a pass target (whether or not the player catches the ball).

The 2nd change is similar to the 1st but applies to Wide-Receivers and Tight-Ends. Now instead of needing 2 receptions to qualify for positive StinkBall points, the WR or TE needs to have at least 3 touches as defined above.

I believe these changes will make the game more fun and competitive. To view the entire StinkBall Scoring System, click on this link. Let me know what you think about this change and any ideas you may have for the future.

All the StinkBall points for week 1 of the 2010 NFL season has been imported into the system EXCEPT the place kickers. I will get the place kicker stats in the system as soon as I can. We may have to calulate the scores for week 1 without the kickers.

Also, you will be able to see the points for you team shortly. I am considering not counting week 1 for the StinkBall Season Long Contest as we have had a couple bumps in the road. What do you think? Let me know.

I would like to give a shout out to NFL players who NEVER get a shout out: The practice squad players. Each NFL team has an eight-man practice squad in addition to their 53 man rosters. These players are elite athletes. Yes, they didn’t make an NFL roster but how many people in the world did? Let me do the math: 32 NFL teams times 53 roster slots = 1696 players. Sounds like a lot right? WRONG!!! When you consider that there are 300 million people who live in the USA and 6 Billion people worldwide, 1696 is a VERY VERY small number. Add to that the practice players: 32 teams times 8 practice squad players = 256 players. So our new total is: 1952 human beings who can say that they play for a NFL team. Wow!!!

My hat goes off to every one of the talented players who made the practice squad on a NFL team. You are one of the top 2000 professional football players in the ENTIRE WORLD. Congrats on making the team and good luck in the future.

I have been thinking a lot lately about what really distinguishes StinkBall from other fantasy football websites. My conclusion is that StinkBall challenges you to get back to the basics of fantasy football. What I mean is: You have to know the Scoring System of StinkBall in order to succeed at StinkBall. This forces you to think about how players and teams score fantasy points. So how do fantasy points get scored? Well I’m glad you asked :)

First rule: To score fantasy points a player or team has to been on the field. Yes I know this sounds obvious but when I talk to people about the concept of StinkBall I get this response A LOT: ”Well I would just put in a lineup of players who don’t play because then I would get 0 points instead of all of those negative points.” There is a misconception that StinkBall uses negative points in the Scoring System because StinkBall focuses on the negative aspects of fantasy football. Let me be clear: You accumulate positive fantasy points based on negative outcomes that occur during the NFL season. This is a tough leap for many people to make because if you have experience in fantasy football, you are used to get minus points for these negative outcomes (i.e. -2 points for every interception your QB makes).

So the first hurdle you have to overcome when playing StinkBall is this paradigm shift of scoring positive points for negative outcomes and scoring negative points for positive outcomes (i.e. in the StinkBall Scoring System you get -6 points for touchdowns scored by a player in your lineup).

Second rule: In order to score fantasy points, your player not only has to be on the field but he also must get in some touches. With the StinkBall Scoring System you have to be careful. Each position has its own penalty (-10 points) for a player not meeting certain positional requirements (i.e. QBs have to have at least 10 passing attempts to avoid the -10 point penalty). So this means that even good NFL players can be valuable in StinkBall contests. Keep this in mind: Even Peyton Manning throws an interception every now and again. Other factors that can keep your players from scoring fantasy points are suspensions and injuries. When I was coming up with the StinkBall Scoring System, I considered giving bonus points if a player in your starting lineup was injured during his game and/or suspended from playing in the league for whatever reason. I decided against this because at the end of the day: I love the NFL and I love fantasy football. I couldn’t rest easy at night knowing that I was hoping for an injury to any of the NFL’s world class athletes. It just didn’t feel right to me and I’m not going to change my stance on this issue so please: Don’t ask me to change the Scoring System to include these bonuses. It’s not going to happen.

There are other “back to basics” rules but for now, I think this will be enough. If I gave you too many hints, it would take away the challenge and the mystery behind the StinkBall contest. I mean come on: At the end of the day don’t we all want to win our fantasy leagues, StinkBall or otherwise, based on our own “gut” instincts and genius player selection? So welcome to StinkBall, have fun and send me your comments and suggestions. But don’t expect me to fill out your starting lineup for you because at the end of the day: Just like the hair club for men guy “I’m not on the CEO of StinkBall but I’m also a player.”

Jason aka “The Real McCoy”
